Frequently Asked Questions

The Canada eTA (Electronic Travel Authorization) is a digital entry clearance required by Canadian immigration authorities for visa-exempt foreign nationals flying to Canada. It is electronically linked to your passport and verified by the airline before boarding.

You need an eTA if you are a citizen of a visa-exempt country — such as the United Kingdom, Australia, France, Germany, Japan, or most European Union member states — and are flying to Canada or transiting through a Canadian airport.

You do not need an eTA if you are a Canadian citizen, a Canadian permanent resident, or a U.S. citizen. U.S. lawful permanent residents (Green Card holders) do require an eTA when flying to Canada. Each traveler, including children and infants, must have their own approved eTA linked to the passport they will travel with.

No. The Canada eTA is not a visa. It is a pre-arrival authorization that permits a visa-exempt foreign national to board a flight to Canada.

Travelers from visa-required countries must still apply for a Canadian visa separately — the eTA does not replace visa requirements. Holding an approved eTA also does not guarantee entry into Canada; final admission decisions are made by a Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) officer at the port of entry.

You should apply for your eTA before booking your flight to Canada, and at the very latest before you travel to the airport. Most applications are approved within minutes, but some cases require additional review and can take up to 72 hours.

There is no specific submission window before travel — once approved, an eTA remains valid for up to 5 years, so you can apply well in advance.

An approved eTA is valid for up to 5 years or until the passport linked to it expires — whichever comes first. During that period, it allows multiple visits to Canada of up to 6 months per stay.

The eTA is tied to the specific passport used during the application and cannot be transferred. If your passport is lost, replaced, or renewed, you must apply for a new eTA before traveling.

Yes. A Canada eTA is required for visa-exempt foreign nationals even when only transiting through a Canadian airport en route to another international destination. This applies whether or not you leave the secure transit area.

Please note that the eTA is required only for air travel. Travelers entering Canada by land or by sea do not need an eTA.

Completing the form in advance helps avoid potential delays.

Yes. An eTA application can be completed on behalf of another traveler, such as a family member or group participant, provided all information matches the traveler’s passport exactly and proper authorization has been obtained.

Each traveler must still have their own individual eTA application, including children and infants.

Once your application is submitted, you will receive a decision by email. Most applicants are approved within minutes; some applications require additional review and may take up to 72 hours.

If approved, the eTA is issued electronically and automatically linked to the passport used during application. No physical document or printout is required — airline systems verify your eTA against your passport at check-in. If your application is refused, the reason will be provided in the email, and you may need to apply for a Canadian visa instead.

No. This platform operates independently and is not affiliated with or endorsed by the Government of Canada, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), or any other Canadian immigration authority.

We provide an optional assistance service that includes guided application support, verification checks, and customer support. All application and entry decisions are made solely by Canadian immigration authorities.
